Felix Auger-AliasSime’s return to the Nitto ATP Finals was short-lived on Monday night, as the Canadian struggled with a calf problem during his 7-5, 6-1 home win over Jannik Deniner in Turin.
After an encouraging start against the Italian, the auger-aliassime appeared to pull his left calf at the end when he came from service at 5-6. Although he continued to compete, the injury affected his movement, but the No. 8 in the PIF atp rankings later alleviated any worries about his physical condition.
“No, not an accident. I’m not too worried. He’s an amazing player. You have to give credit when the guy is better than you,” said Auger-Alias. “Today he was better than me. I will be ready for the next one.”
Auger-AliasSime, making his first appearance with the club since 2022, was on the wrong side with several set pieces, but the Italian began to turn the tide of his own. He won 100 percent (21/21) of the points after his first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats, in the first set.
“He’s hard to beat anywhere, especially here,” said Auger-AliasSime, who now supports the 2-4 in their Lexus Atp Head2head series. “He started to wonder [and] he never really looked back. From start to finish, she was amazing. A guy with power to hit here. “
However, the Canadian insisted that he remains mentally strong despite the physical setback and defeat, maintaining a balanced view of the type of competition that is an eight-man event.
“I have never [afraid] Because we can’t do it again, “says Jesus o auger-alias I’m very focused, I’m very driven.
“[I’ve] he has never been afraid of a game of tennis. [You’re] The main focus when playing at this level, everything needs to be very directed and very precise from the first moments. “
Monday’s meeting marks the fourth meeting between the auger-aliassime and the soni since August – a stretch in which the Italian has strengthened its unity over their rising rivals. Just eight days before their clash in Turin, they faced off in the final of the Rolex Paris Masters, where the sinner was also defeated, but in two tight sets.
“I had played him a few times this year, so I knew what to expect,” added auger-aliassime. “It’s like when you play this high level, you have to be very good. That’s it.”
While the loss was a difficult opening to wind up his Tugen campaign, the auger-aliasime will hope that the calf controversy is resolved quickly as it looks at Ben Sherton on Wednesday and Alexander Zever on Friday.
