Hurricanes defeat Maple Leafs 5-4 Seeking 4th straight win – Hockey Writers – Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes came to Ontario to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first of three games during the 2025-26 season. It was a special night as it was the “HALL OF FAME DOOR”, with a special ceremony before the game for the 2025 Hall of Fame Class Inductions. The Hurricanes were winners of their last four, and were in a three-game winning streak. The maple leaves had won three straight before their most recent loss to the boston bruins. It was the top two teams in the Eastern Conference on the show looking to add wins before the weekend was over. After the final horn, the Hurricanes beat the Maple Leafs 5-4 for their fourth straight win.

Game clarity

The first period saw five goals, three from the maple leaves and two from the storm. William Nylander booked the goals as he scored the first goal of the game, five minutes into the opening page. He pointed a pass from Matthew Omina when he flew to the top slot in the storm zone. He then scored with 59 seconds left to give the Maple Leafs the lead again to make it 3-2. By then, the Hurricanes had taken a 2-1 lead, thanks to Setastian Aho and Seti Jarvis.

He scored on a power play after a pass from Nikolaj Ehlers across the ice, 65 meters straight. Jarvis made it to the lead after a great sequence of passes from Alexander Nikishin and Andrei Svechnikov to find him in the Maple Leafs’ goal.

John Tavares, in his 1,200th game, tied the game up 2-2 exactly a minute after Jarvis’ goal. He took the transition pass after the last follow up from Brandon Buster. Bussi and Dennis Hilleby seemed to be attacked in the first 20 minutes of the game, with the shooting being a 12-11 storm, but the score was 3-2 after one.

The second period saw two goals in the middle frame, one from each side. Auston Matthews made it 4-2 for the Maple Leafs after passing from the right side of the net and tying it in with a bus at the top of the crease. After hitting the posts three times earlier in the period, the Hurricanes finally got a goal, this one from Sean Walker. That’s his third goal in four games to bring the visitors within one. After two, it was 4-3 maple leaves.

In what was two back-to-back periods between the maple leaves and the storms, the visitors were able to score two points in the final frame to complete the comeback. Taylor Hall tied the game 4-4 just 3:20 into the third period. Logan Stankoven would end up getting the game-winning goal, giving himself many nights after an assist on a goal in the hall, to make it 5-4 for the Hurricanes. Nikolaj Ehlers and K’Andre Miller had a high-scoring night as well, following two assists each with AHO’s goal and Stankoven’s goal.

After the setback, the Hurricanes are now on a small winning streak, and are 11-4-0 on the season. They return home to take on the Washington titles on Tuesday, Noven 11. As for the Maple Leafs, they fall to 8-7-1 following the loss. Their next game is on November 11th when they travel to Boston to take on the Bruins.
