Lorenzo Musetti is alive and kicking at the Nitto ATP Finals. The Italian got his maiden victory at the prestigious event of the year on Tuesday night, when he battled Alex de Minaur 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in the Turin Thriller.
Buoyed by a rousing home crowd, Mumetti staged an impressive comeback from 3-5 down in the decider to draw 1-1 to Jimmy Connors’ team and keep his qualification hopes strong. The 23-year-old sealed the deal in his second game when he blasted past Warning Parener on the run before celebrating with his team-mates.
“I was fighting hard physically because Alex raised the level and strength and I was really fighting to find a solution,” said Mumetti. “But in the end with a lot of heart and a lot of love for this game, I don’t know, I started to feel better and play better and the support of the crowd is amazing.”
The 23-year-old was converted from the player who had fallen to Taylor Fritz 30 hours ago. He came around the base with renewed purpose, pulling de minaurs with heavy ball protection and hitting key moments with fist pumps to beat the home support.
After the end of the second set, Musetti found his spark again when it mattered most. He recovered from losing the 31-shot meeting at 4-3, 30/30, one that set a big boundary and left both players flat on the court, before filing a surprise charge late. When De Minaur worked on the game, Musetti hit a comeback, then rode a wave of momentum and noise to seal one of the biggest wins of his season after two hours and 47 minutes.
Musetti will face the No 1 Player in the PIF ATP rankings Carlos Alcaraz in his third match on Thursday. The Spaniard, aiming to win the nitto atp finals for the first time, is 2-0 this week, as he beat de minaur and Fritz. All four players can still qualify for the semi-finals.
“I’m a hero,” Musetti said. “I’ve improved a lot mentally and I’m pushing myself to the limit because I’m playing every match against the best players. Next up is against Carlos.” I will try to enjoy and fight like I did today. “
Meshetti has now won all three of his Lexus ATP Head2head meetings against De Minaur, having also won ATP Masters Events in Clay-Carlo and Madrid this year. While those performances helped fuel Masetti’s momentum in Monte-Carlo and the semi-Finals in Madrid, Tuesday’s victory marked his first victory over 2025 opponents.
Competing in Turin for the first time, Musetti is eligible after an excellent campaign. He reached the finals in Monte-Carlo, Chengdu and recently, Athens last week, including a record of 45-21 in the season, according to the index of loss infosys ATP Before 2025, the Italian had never collected more than 40 tour viewing levels in one year, a milestone that he blinked behind.
De Minaurs’ best result for the 26-year-old, who came last in Rotterdam, is 0-2 this week.
