Demons survive 3-2 shootout comeback effort – Hockey Writers –

The new jersey opened the scoring on a power play goal from rookie Arseni Gritsyuk in a 1-0 road contest. Luka Hughes put Russia ahead with a one-timer from the left circle with his fourth goal of the season at the 5:05 mark of the first period.
The Demons continued to control play in the opening frame and scored another puck past Logan Thompson with 2:14 left in the first period. Washington’s NetMinder stopped the first opportunity with a breakaway from Jester Bratt. However, the Demons forward regrouped and pushed the lead towards the point when Hughes fired a shot down the road to double the lead, 2-0. New Jersey Outshoots Washington 14-8 in a dominant first period.
Washington fought back in the second half with an 11-7 lead, but there was no point in the second period as Jake Allen converted for the home team.
The Capitals stormed back into the game with a goal in the opening minute of the third period from Connor McMichael, his second scoring effort of his second 2025-26 season. Alex Ovechkin and Jakob Chychrun helped at the beginning of the period when Ovechkin regrouped at the suspected net, shot an open McMmichael to buy in a very open cage 2-1 Devil Hall.
Oviechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, added to his tally with his 902nd career goal to tie the game at 2. McMichael threw a puck towards the back of the net, but the big Russian forward moved his stick forward and was hit by a black disc in the net to tie the game at the 8:19 mark of the third period. It is Ovethkin’s fifth goal of the 2025-26 campaign, tied for second-most on the Capitals behind Tom Wilson (nine goals).

The goalies clashed with each other in overtime, with Thompson making a spectacularly organized drive, cut through, quickly followed by a game-saving effort by Allen with one-time headers as play flowed back toward New Jersey. Thompson stopped seven shots from the Demons in extra money compared to just two stops by Allen in the 3-on-3 session.
In the shootout, Washington scored first after Dylan Strime stuffed the puck past Allen Fornesnard. Bratt tied the shot on a bad backhand shot that hit the roof of the net behind Thompson’s shoulder. NEMEC called the game by hitting the puck through the Thompson five hole to close the game for the new jersey.

Both teams will meet on Sunday followed by action on Saturday night. Washington continues a three-game homestand with the middle game of the set against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday, Nov. 17.
