Kraken third period comeback leads to 5-3 win over Jets – Hockey Writers – Seattle kraken
The Winnipeg Jets were dominated offensively Thursday night, but a decisive third-period push propelled the Seattle Kraken to a 5-3 victory at Climate Pleam Arena. Despite Winnipeg leading the blowout, scoring opportunities, and percentage against key errors and points came in time to take the second game of the season series and improve the jets this season.
Game clarity
The game opened with Winnipeg asserting early control. Strong movement of the puck through the neutral zone and constant pressure forced on its heels, and the jets were rewarded at 10:17 when Alex Iafallo reached the edge of the crusch behind Philipp Grubuueer after the first period.
However, Seattle responded right when they needed them. At 15:15, Kaapo Kakko was set in the cell and received a piece of Jaden Schwartz’s blast, lifted it and entered the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1. The kraken didn’t create many scoring chances in the opening frame, but they made good on their best chance. Time expired, with both teams seeing room for improvement: Winnipeg wanted to finish more, while Seattle wanted more rhythm.
The second time was Winnipeg’s Perminal Speckive very much. The Jets outshot Seattle 13-5 and timed out with extended layups and puck support. Their work paid off early when Mark Scheifele scored his 10th goal of the season at 3:18, taking the lead back to 2-1.
But just like they did in the first period, Seattle responded with scoring opportunities. At 7:27, Vince Dunn sent a cheap wrist shot past Connor Hellebuyck, tying the game 2-2 despite the flow of play getting more help from Winnipeg’s Denigh.
The Jets regained control late in the frame on the power play. Kyle Connor closed the feed from the circle, and it was defeated by Ryan Lindgren before entering the back of the net, giving Winnipeg a 3-2 lead in the second period. With exceptional special teams, various metrics, and a boost from Connor’s goal, the jerseys look poised to take over the game.
It all opened up for Winnipeg in the third period.
Seattle came out with a renewed structure and purpose, changing the pace of the game instead. The Jets couldn’t clear their spot on the first penalty kill, and Eeli Tolvanen made them pay at 4:11, firing a one-timer to tie the game. Goal spent life on the kraken bench and set the tone for the rest of the season.
Just three minutes later, Jordan Eberle scored the conversion. His layup at 7:21 gave Seattle its first lead of the night at 4-3, swinging the momentum entirely. Winnipeg struggled to generate high-danger pressure from that point forward, being limited to nine possessions at a time as Seattle held tight defensively.
Eberle added an ampty-netter at 18:25, completing the comeback to secure a 5-3 Kraken victory.
