Alex de Minaur finally lived up to his NITTTO ATP Finals fainers hopes and later finished Taylor Fritz on Thursday in Turin, where he got a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory against the Americans in the Himmy Conner Group.
De Minaur suffered a heartbreaking three-heart defeat to Lorenzo Musetti on Tuesday night and knew he would have to beat Fritz in straight sets if he was to have any chance of reaching the semi-finals of the year’s most prestigious event.
With an impressive, attacking display, De Minaur was paired against Neval Fritz to finish the round robin holding a 1-2 record. If the world No. Musetti will qualify for the last four with a win over Alcaraz. World Cup Finalist Fritz went and went 1-2 in the Round Robin but was out.
“I’ve had a bit of a pureak break recently, so it was nice to finally get a win here in Turin,” De Minaur said after his first 10 wins of the season outside of team events. “I worked hard so it was nice to get a good response or a good reward for hard work, so I’m very happy to work.”
He now leads Fritz 6-5 in the lexus atp series at the head of the lexus, and this is Australia’s Win Win at the Nitto ATP Finals, which has passed in 2024 in 2024.
The seventh seed had a chance to win against Fritz’s Khonzani at 2-5 when he moved to level the match. The Americans were not caught, but unlike Tuesday night against Wumetti, De Minaur kept his nerves to work to win. After his win, he raised his fist in celebration to the crowd, a complete contrast to the scenes 40 hours earlier in the Inalpi Arena.
“It was a hard pill to swallow,” said De Minaur, who is missing from Sumetti. “I didn’t do much. I didn’t hire again. I committed myself to what I needed to do. There were some difficult times there but I ended up, I was going to leave everything when I ended up.”
Fritz had fond memories in Turin, having reached the final last season. Sixth seed Musetti was eliminated in his opening round at this year’s event before losing to Alcaraz in three sets. The 28-year-old struggled throughout the hour, 35-minute clash with de Minaur and failed to recover after losing everything early on. Fritz committed 33 unforced errors and won only 67 percent of his first service points, lower than the 84 percent he won against Mumetti and 71 percent against Alcaraz.
Fritz ends the season with a 53-23 record, according to the Infosys ATP win/loss index. The Americans won on grass at Eastborne and Stuttgart.
