Giampa lifts Miami to OT WIN in front of Goggin’s biggest crowd since 2015 – Hockey Writers – NCAA

It was the largest crowd at the Goggin Ice Center since 2015, with 3,642 sellout fans packed into Friday night. They saw their Miami Redhawks pull off a 6-5 overtime thriller over the St. Louis Huskies.
With the loss, the state of St. Cloud fell to 6-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in NCHC play.

Six different Skaters found Miami: Michael Quinn, Ethan Hay, Kocha Delic, David Deputy, Casper Nassen, and Matteo Giampa with the game winner. Goaltender Matteo Drobac went down 14 of 19 shots, three of those goals coming Wednesday.
St. Cloud State got two goals from Gavyn Thoroson, while Barrett Hall, Sitho Ahkan, and Tyson Gross each added, to make it four separate goals. Netminder Yan Shostak made 28 saves on 34 shots in the loss.
Game clarity
Quinn opened the scoring for the first time on the power play, slotting home a 1-0 lead. Hay didn’t get a point on the play, but he provided just enough of a screen to take Sourtak’s eyes off.
At one point, Miami led 18-3 in shots on goal and 32-7 in total field goal attempts.
At the start of the second, hay hay broke away from a pass from Michael Phelan and appeared to score with a clean sweep. After a review of possible goalie interference because Hay put his stick in the net and may have pushed Shorak back, the call stood, giving Miami a 2-0 lead.
A turnover behind the Miami net later in the period set up St. Cloud State’s first goal, as Hall buried it to cut the lead to 2-1. He later tied the game 2-2 on the rebound in front of Finn Locuces.
Dilic restored Miami’s lead in two hitting the side of Shostak’s Glove, with Vice picking up the assist. Miami blocked 11 shots in the period despite a strong ST push.
Thoron then somehow somehow got into three games of the redhawks behind the net and went drobac to tie the game 3-3. It was the first shorthanded goal Miami has allowed this season. It was a poor defensive breakdown and another soft goal conceded so far in this game.
With five minutes left in the third, Sekela finally scored his first goal, ripping an open puck past an out-of-position Shostak to put Miami back. Less than a minute later, Nassen headed in Vladislav Lukashevich’s shot to make it 5-3.
But the state of ST. Cloud was not made. Gross hit an extra-attacker to cut it to 5-4 with about four minutes left, and Thoson struck again moments later when he went on a layup to capture the crowd and make it 5-5.
After Miami was held in overtime, Giampa broke out two-one with the Vice and snatched the top shelf to win 6-5.
Miami scored two points instead of three after letting a 5-3 lead go into the third, but for a program that hasn’t won much in recent times, this was a big moment. St. Cloud State scored one point in the loss.
Miami finished 4-for-4 on the Peneraly Bull and 1-for-4 on the power play.
Kyle Aucoin had his best game of the season in his return from injury. He blocked a team-high shot and assisted on GIAMPA’s overtime call.
The deputy continues to improve every game. He posted two points, a goal, and an assist, led the team with 11 shot attempts, and recorded five shots on goal. Max’s Quinn, Nassen, and Helgesson finished with two points each. Lukashevich also picked up his 10th assist of the season.
Miami Outshot St. Cloud State trailed 34-19 and led 68-49 in total field goals. Also, Miami blocked 15 shots, while St. Cloud State finishes 14th.
