A confident, heavy-hitting Taylor Fritz carried the momentum for a scant 90 seconds against Carlos Alcaraz at the Nitto ATP Finals on Tuesday. But the Spaniard showed his trademark tenacity and escaped with a 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-3 victory.

Last year’s Finalist has lost his defeat set in his three games in the last conference after the match, with particular emphasis on his missed opportunities, none of which is more remarkable than he allowed two points breaking 2- in the second bet.

“My chance to win that game was in second place, and I didn’t take it,” Fritz said. “I had opportunities. I had everything I could ask for.”

While holding his first point of the second set, Fritz had the upper hand in an exciting shootout, but Alcaraz quickly turned the tables and moved forward to take away the backcourt. Fritz had an overhead chance but chose to let the ball go out, a decision he later admitted, “I might have sent it into the air.”

It was raging rage from Fritz, who was otherwise pulled by punches from the world No. 1.

“I can say that the most frustrating thing is the many opportunities to get to my mind that my best I actually have the ball that I want to attack you enough,” said Fritz, who is 1-1 in the team of Jimmy Connors.

“The first two sets of this match I felt like I was getting more chances. That’s because I was coming back well, coming back really aggressively.”

Fritz is now 1-5 in his lexus ATP Head2head series with Alcaraz, with four of their meetings coming up this year. The Americans found out that his girls win against Alcaraz in the laver cup in September. Thinking about his meeting with the Spaniard, Fritz was a high-profile 22-year-old.

“He’s always guilty,” said Fritz of Alcaraz. “I don’t even get the chance to get balls to attack. Today I did, I wasn’t clinical enough in finishing some points and some big points.”

Next up for Fritz is Alex de Minaur, who tied the American 5-5 in their lexus ATP Head2head series. It will mark their first meeting in 2025.

Asked about his deantinitis, Fritz admitted that he will continue to play through the pain.

“I start feeling it when I’m bending over, loading up, kind of lighting up,” said the 10-time Tour-Level Titlist. “I think that’s a big part of why it happened today, one, the game yesterday, and two, I was coming back a lot in this game. It showed when I came back.

“You can go along with the video and compare side by side and see that in the third set, my back leg is not bent too much, not loading as much as it was at the beginning of the match.”
