Adrian Kempe and the Los Angeles Kings have struck a deal

The Los Angeles Kings and Adrian Kempe have agreed to a new eight-year contract extension worth $85 million.

Kempo’s new contract with the Kings carries an average value of $10.625 million.

There were reports that if Kyle Connor was signed by the Winnipeg Jets for $12 million, and Martin Necas signed with the Colorado Avalanche for $11.5 million.

NHL Rumors: The latest on Artemi Panarin and Alex Tuch

However, here is another first example of Connor McDavid taking a small fee to stay with the Oiders in Edmonton ($12.5 million AAV), which affects other contract negotiations. Just look at Lane Hutson and the Montreal Canadiens. Hutson took less to stay in Montreal to win.

Kempe took less than 11 million because he wanted to stay with the kings who won there. He made that known from the beginning. The Kings wanted him, and Kempo made it clear that he wanted to stay in Los Angeles.

Kempe also noted before the start of the season, as part of the NHL / NHLPA European Media Tour, that he did not want this contract negotiation to linger in 2026 or beyond the trade deadline. The preference was to do it before the end of 2025.

This is a win-win for both the player and the organization. New Kings GM Ken Holland is making the signing of Adrian Kempe very important. Just look at what he did in Los Angeles, especially in the playoffs. He has 29 points (15 goals and 14 assists) in 28 games played. In his regular season career, Kempo has put up 420 points (200 goals and 220 assists) in 649 regular season games.

NHL rumors: Florida Panthers and slow-moving Sergei Bobrovsky in extension talks

This season with the Kings, he has 19 points (6 goals, 13 assists) in 19 games. Los Angeles couldn’t afford a homegrown talent like kempe. The Kings drafted him in the first round (29th overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Another free agent on the board as the 2026 free agent class continues to dwindle.
