Things continue to roll for the Colorado Avalanche, the NHL’s best team. They picked up their sixth straight win by beating the New York Islanders, and look to end the New York sweep by getting the New Yorkers down on Thursday night.
The Rangers kept it a two-run game but eventually succumbed to the avalanche like everyone else. The Avalanche scored four in the Ranger net in the third period to claim a 6-3 win, their seventh straight.
The offense is deep even with goaltenders participating
Ad Nunuseum mentions how deep the avalanche is. The three-headed monster of Mackinnon / Necas / Makar continues to dominate, but the avalanche has a whopping 10 players with double-digit points in 20 games.
They can add one name to the offensive column: goaltender Scott Wedgewood. It’s not enough that he had the best time of his career between the pipes, now he’s adding a little to his game by helping out the playing time of Brock Nelson’s electric power.
All jokes aside, six players besides Mackinnon and Makar registered at least one point on the night. Necas and Nelson had five points between them. Even on nights when the superstars are silent, someone will pick up the slack.
Mackinnon and Makar ran for generational
Speaking of the three-headed monster, we can’t help but mention the two biggest stars in that lineup: Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar. They play drivers even when they’re not on the stuff page, eating up monster minutes along the way.

Both played north of 25 minutes against the opposition, and it started as both registered goals and assists. MacKinnon leads EdMon Moving Edmonton’s Connor McDavid (with three games in hand) in the scoring race while Necas and Makar are tied for fifth in the league with 28 points apiece.
Having the best of what is possibly the best in the league combined with a very good devinseman may have made an avalanche of bad plays. The fact that they have a fake status means that they can eat up all those minutes and not even cut back a bit, either.
The Avalanche are on a historic run
With this win over the Rangers, the Avalanche carved a place in history. They became just the fourth team in NHL history – joining the Flouns of 1927-27), 19-13-3), and 197-13) – as the only teams in NHL history to have one-point games.
Their level of dominance on this point is not low. Even in games they technically lost, they fought back from big challenges and at least got a point. If they sweat even two overtime losses in the win column, the numbers look even more ridiculous.
This is probably the best time ever to be an avalanche fan. The franchise has been fortunate to have some great players of all time wear the uniforms, but this could be the best team Denver has ever seen.
It cannot allow
If there is one caveat to it all, it’s the fact that the Avalanche have a .825 winning percentage that gets them four percent over the Dallas Stars in the middle standings. Avalanche is doing it in style and nl-Best + 34 goal difference, but the gap is still small.
The Anaheim Ducks and Vegas Gold Knights are a few points behind them, which means that even with their dominant run, the Avalanche have competition breathing down their necks. Which means there is no way to let the gas pedal.
