Why The Wrong Iron Sloe Can Hurt Your Scores

When golfers think of bounce, they usually think of wedges. But the same principles that influence hitting position, launch and turf contact with a 56-degree wedge apply equally to your 6 iron.
A typical wedge includes looking at the player’s angle of attack (AOA) and divot pattern. While understanding the general playing conditions of the client, my main conditions are to help get the strike closer to where you want it.
More bounce will move the strike down, thus producing a lower launch shot. On the other hand, a lower bounce will launch more into the ball, producing a higher launch shot. How one moves the wedge influences the bounce they will choose.
The purpose of this article is to illustrate the range alone and pole vaulters should be viewed in a proper way with the same level of attention as in the water.
When a player needs a little bend in their tracks
I’ll start with the most common example I see. Client A is a good golfer. He releases his shallow 6-iron, which produces a left axis on his fine string.
This customer plays a set of irons that includes a soft one and a 6-iron loft of 60 degrees. He wonders why even his good steel guns have a shallow ground angle and less than proper spin.
This player is still in the highest collection of irons where it crashes on the part of the face that is often killed by maybe 30 degrees. Client A, being a shallow swinger and golfer, hits the club too much, introducing the lower part of the fairway, resulting in an unwanted low iron run.
One of the first things I want to try with this client is a metal head with a boft under and over. Remember from the first section, a slight bend moves the strike higher, producing a higher launch shot. Client A could use a set of instruments that are more invasive between the face. Combined with the high-end set, he should see a soft metal gun at any time.

While being careful about the bounce on your irons is more of an immediate concern for the better player, it should not be discounted as an excuse for players with less skills or who have brought the Golf Club.
When a player needs more teasing in their areas
My second example is something I see every week in my role as a master fitter with real shiff. Client B has been playing for a few years now, but I have never had formal golf lessons. He came to this game after playing another game a lot. Some of the habits from his previous endeavors die hard with his golf.
Client B moves his 6 iron in a fashion that would produce a low FADE in the best conditions. He uses a set of golf clubs that a friend recommended to him when he started. Irons are a great set of back muscles that can be held on the turf in front of ball strikers.
With his steep delivery, Client B has little hope of hitting any type of shot that reflects his clubhead speed. Client B has good club speed, but the high pitch of the blade robs him of great distance, and poor, control.
