Most golf problems are privilege problems, which means they don’t evoke high levels of pique. Shane Lowry proved his PGA prowess on the bare fairways, where the Irishman unleashed F-BOMS bombs and swore at the turf after being denied a fairway pitch park and sinking a wedge into a greenside bunker. Lowry later provided context. He was humbled, he said, not by the decision but by what he saw as the fun involvement of an ESPN reporter. Lowry was also captured on camera appearing to flash his middle finger in the hole.

There is nothing wrong with the sound in the RYDER CUP. SAPAGEAGY SAVAGERY is fair game, too, as long as the barbs are clever and don’t deliver well below the belt. And I’ve never had anyone try to play with it. With those and many other small steps, the insults hurled at the opposition – and particularly at McCloroy – failed miserably. Call them what you want.
