Since joining Inter Miami in July 2023, Jordi Alba has been one of the club’s most influential players—even as he enters the final chapter of his career. Following the announcement of his contract extension, the Spanish left-back addressed both his retirement plans and Lionel Messi‘s unresolved contract situation.

In recent weeks, speculation has swirled regarding Messi’s future with the MLS side. With his contract set to expire in December 2025 and no official updates from the club, fans and media alike have raised questions. When asked about the topic, Alba set his hopes for a renewal.

“I’m not renewing for anyone, but I hope Leo stays. I think he’s a vital player for us and obviously for the club as well,” the Spanish left back told reporters onFriday’s press conference.

“I understand your concern, and of course, for me too, it’s much better if Leo stays,” Alba added. “We’ve known each other for many years, we already have that understanding on the field, and for me—I’ve said it many times—with Leo on the field, I and everyone on the team are better players. It would be great news if Leo continues,” he stated.

Messi played a pivotal role for both Alba and Sergio Busquets‘ arrival to Inter Miami to reunite with two of their best teammates from FC Barcelona. However, now with his contract situation still in the air, Messi is starting to raise concern, not only among fans, but on his Inter Miami teammates too.

Jordi Alba signs new contract with Inter Miami

Alba, 36, was in a similar situation before his contract renewal was confirmed Thursday. Initially set to expire in December 2025, his new deal will now keep him at the club through 2027. Asked if this would be the final stop in his career, Alba didn’t hesitate.

“Because of my age, yes,” he said while laughing. “We have to be aware of how old I am. I believe I’m still performing well, but yes, my dream is to finish here. Whatever year it may be, to end my career here—but I hope to keep growing and helping the club in whatever is asked of me. That’s the intention.”

With his contract now secured through age 38, Alba has set his sights on closing out his decorated career in Miami—regardless of whether Messi stays or goes.
