After a blossoming start at Nitto ATP Fight Week, Alex de Minaur found something he’s been chasing all season: momentum on his own terms.
Australia got its first win in that period on Thursday, enabling taylor fritz to end the demons of five previous losses in Turin (0-2 in 2025). 7-6 (3), six throws) regained a sense of belief after he admitted his third loss to Lorenzo Musetti on Tuesday was one of the most emotionally difficult challenges of his career.
“For the first time in a long time, I forgot about the ‘what ifs’, the consequences, what if I miss this shot,” said Ki Minaur. “I just committed myself to the way I wanted to play from point one to the end. The last few days I haven’t.
“Today I knew that no matter what, I wanted to be proud of my decision-making, my aggressive mindset, and I wanted to go out there trying to win the game.”
The turnaround did not come by accident for the No 7 player in the PIF ATP rankings. Against Fritz, De Minaur played with the confidence that left him earlier in the week, explaining from the base and passing forward.
He puts this down in part to the team around him, including British WTA Tour Star and Fiancée Katie Boulter, who picked him up after a narrow defeat to Mumetti.
“To be honest, I’m very lucky with the support system I have, the people I’m close to, all the people on my team, even Katie,” said Katie, who won the ATP 500 in Washington this year. “They were able to – or they tried – they tried – they talked about a certain idea to me. The last few days have been one of the hardest days that I have had in my career … I am here two days later and I feel good.
“But more than anything, no matter what happened today, I had made peace with myself. I was going to know it from the beginning to the end. I was just going to have to play my way.”

The ending didn’t come without drama. After losing a match point by coming back from 5-2 in the second set and entering 0/30 when serving to win, De Minaur is possible. Instead, he scoffed – literally.
“After that moment of the game, I just started laughing with my team because I was like ‘there’s something against me… I have an eye’,” de Minaurd. “I’m just not allowed to win games again. After that we go 0/30.
“Actually, it took some of my best tennis today. I hit an amazing ace, then I worked and I had the ability to relax and I played to be able to win.” So I can win. “
De Minaur could have qualified for the semi-Finals in Turin if Carlos Alcaraz judged Mumetti on Thursday evening, but regardless of that result, De Minaur feels like he has lined up near the Elite of the game. He explored land no. 1 Alycaraz in his first round robin clashed and took the hero who will make Beijing Jannik a sinner in three sets at the ATP 500 events.
“I feel like I’ve got a lot of momentum lately in these types of games,” De Minaur said when asked about some of his top players’ abilities to challenge the likes of Alcaraz and Son. “I went out on the stage where you go out there, you compete, but you don’t get many chances. I feel like I get my chances. Even here against Carlos in the first set [tie-break]5/3 Up, 5/4, two works, I put myself in good positions.
“Jannik, I played a good match against him in Beijing. In Vienna, he got the better of me, but I think it’s worth it for me to be better.”
