Trent Alexander-Arnoldโ€˜s move to Real Madrid had long seemed inevitable following his announcement to leave Liverpool. However, with his contract running until the end of June, questions lingered about his availability for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Now, Real Madrid have reportedly made a strategic move to secure his participation in the tournament earlier than expected.

The Xabi Alonso era is officially underway in Madrid, with the club actively reshaping its roster through key signings and departures. Following the official arrival of center back Dean Huijsen, attention turned to finalizing Alexander-Arnoldโ€™s situation. To free him from the final weeks of his Liverpool contract, Real Madrid reportedly executed a well-timed solution.

According to The Athletic, Real Madrid paid Liverpool โ‚ฌ10 million (around $11.4 million) in a one-time payment to expedite Alexander-Arnoldโ€™s arrival. The deal also includes Real Madrid covering the right backโ€™s salary for June and July, including any performance-related bonuses owed to him.

โ€œReal Madrid C.F. and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement for Trent Alexander-Arnold to join our club for the next six seasons, from June 1, 2025, to June 30, 2031,โ€ read the clubโ€™s official statement, confirming his availability for the Club World Cup.

Originally, Alexander-Arnold was set to miss the group stage of the tournamentโ€”which kicks off on June 14โ€”as well as a potential round of 16 match between June 28 and 30, due to contractual obligations with Liverpool. With this move, Alonso gains access to one of the worldโ€™s top right backs for the entirety of the competition.

Alexander-Arnold leaves behind a legacy at Liverpool

Though his departure was met with boos from some supporters in his final appearances, Alexander-Arnoldโ€™s legacy at Liverpool is firmly intact. Having joined the Redsโ€™ academy at the age of six, he spent two decades at the club and evolved into one of the best defenders in modern soccer.

Over his 354 appearances for Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold scored 23 goals and registered 92 assists, playing a pivotal role in the clubโ€™s return to prominence. He helped secure the 2018โ€“19 UEFA Champions League title, and was instrumental in Liverpoolโ€™s two Premier League-winning campaigns in 2019โ€“20 and 2024โ€“25.

Originally trained as a midfielder, he redefined the right back position with his vision, passing range, and creativityโ€”becoming the on-field architect of the team. He leaves the Premier League as the 13th all-time leader in assists (65), surpassing club legend Steven Gerrard, and ranking as the highest-assisting defender in league history.
