Angel Cabrera won his second senior major in a week, shooting a three-under 69 and rallying for a one-stroke victory in the Senior PGA Championship.
Cabrera, the 2007 US Open and 2009 Masters champion, won the rain-delayed Regions Tradition on Monday in Alabama, which was the Argentine’s first senior major.
Six days later at Congressional, he trailed Padraig Harrington by two strokes after Harrington rolled in a long birdie putt at the 14th in the final round.
But Harrington then double-bogeyed the 15th and Cabrera birdied the hole a short while later to take the lead. After a bogey by Harrington on the par-four 18th, Cabrera needed only a closing bogey – and got it.
“I’m extremely happy after winning two tournaments in a row, and also three tournaments within a year,” Cabrera told NBC through a translator. “I’m extremely happy, especially after everything that happened.
“I didn’t know that it was going to happen this quickly, winning two tournaments in a row, especially with all these great players around this tour. I feel very emotional and proud.”
Cabrera spent 20 months in an Argentine prison after he was accused of making threats toward former partners.
He was released on parole in August 2023 and won a PGA Tour Champions event last month before missing the cut at The Masters.
Cabrera shared the 54-hole lead with South Africa’s Retief Goosen, England’s Phillip Archer and Jason Caron.
He was one over through five holes on Sunday, but the turning point came on an eagle at the par-five sixth, with birdies at the eighth, 11th and 15th gradually pushing him ahead.
Harrington and Thomas Bjorn both shot 68 to share second place, while Caron and Goosen both carded a final-round 71 and tied Stewart Cink (70) for fourth at six under as Archer dropped to even par after shooting a five-over 77.
