Transfermarkt has adjusted the market values of 670 players in the latest Championship market value update. Remarkably, the English second-flight is the sixth most valuable league in world football, only behind Europe’s top-five leagues. It’s a division brimming with talent, as teams battle it out for a place in the Premier League. This May, among the biggest winners of the Championship market value update were Sheffield United’s young midfielder Sydie Peck, and the Sunderland duo of Eliezer Mayenda and Tom Watson. Sunderland, Sheffield United and Leeds United rose the most in squad market value, whilst relegated Luton Town suffered the biggest downgrade in squad value.
Wilfried Gnonto & James Trafford join Jobe Bellingham as league MVP
Leeds winger Wilfried Gnonto was one of the biggest winners of the update with a +€4 million market value increase, and his new value of €22m draws him level as the joint most valuable player in the Championship. The Premier League-bound 21-year-old has already made 13 caps for Italy, and ended the season in fine form with four goal contributions in the last three games of the campaign. There was also a market value increase for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. The Clarets have enjoyed the best defensive season in Championship history conceding just 16 goals in 46 matches, and Trafford’s +€2m increase takes his new value to €22m. The pair now join Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham, who maintains his €22m valuation.
Eliezer Mayenda, Tom Watson & Sydie Peck biggest winners
The biggest winner from this latest update was Sunderland forward Mayenda. The Spain U21 international has really grown into the season – he finished with eight goals and five assists, but shone in the play-offs, scoring against Coventry in the semi-final and in the final vs Sheffield United. He is upgraded by +€8m to a new market value of €12m. Sheffield United’s 20 year old midfielder Peck has been one of the breakthrough stars in the Championship this season. He played just once in the Premier League last term, but has featured in 42 league games for the Blades in the heart of their midfield this season, and is duly rewarded with a huge 3650% upgrade to a new market value of €7.5m. Watson was the hero for Sunderland at Wembley, as he scored the winning goal to send them back to the Premier League. His value rises from €500k all the way to €8m ahead of his €12m summer move to Brighton.
Chris Rigg becomes one of world’s most valuable 17 year olds
Sunderland’s prodigious talent Chris Rigg only turns 18 years old next month, and can now lay claim to being the current outright third most valuable 17 year old in world football, only behind Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Lille midfielder Ayouub Bouaddi. The teenager has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs and sees his market value rise by a further +€4m to a new market value of €20m. He started the play-off final, and will likely now stay with the Black Cats in the Premier League next season.
Sunderland biggest squad value increase, Luton come out worst
When it comes to squad market values, play-off final winners Sunderland actually received the biggest upgrade. The Black Cats rose in value by +€35.5m to a new squad value of €177.4m. That now makes them the third most valuable team from current Championship sides, but still has them as the lowest valued team in the Premier League next season as things stand. At the other end of the scale, it was huge downgrades across the board for League One bound Luton Town. The Hatters dropped -€23.1m in squad value to a new total of €71.5m.
