On Friday Real Madrid confirmed the signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold on a six-year deal ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup. While the England international was widely expected to complete a free transfer to the LaLiga giants at the start of the normal transfer window in July, the Spanish giants have paid a nominal fee to sign him early ahead of the international competition. According to the Athletic, the defender departed Liverpool ahead of schedule for a reported fee of €10 million.

Although the 26-year-old talent’s fee is relatively small, Alexander-Arnold makes the move to Madrid with a market value of €75 million – making the English star the fourth most valuable player to join the Spanish club in their history. Only Jude Bellingham (market value of €120m at the time), Eden Hazard (€150m) and Kylian Mbappé (€180m) have joined Los Blancos with a higher market value than Alexander-Arnold, who overtook Gareth Bale and Thibaut Courtois (both €65m).

Born and raised in Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold came through Liverpool’s youth ranks and broke into the first team at the age of 18, before going on to play over 350 games for the Anfield club. In that time Alexander-Arnold has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups and the all-important Champions League title in 2019. When he announced his departure from the club earlier this month, Alexander-Arnold underlined his love for the club and why he was making what he called “the hardest decision” of his life to swap Anfield for Santiago Bernabéu.

“This club has been my whole life – my whole world – for 20 years. From the academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever. I will forever be in debt to you all,” said the player in a statement on Instagram. “But, I have never known anything else and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally. I’ve given my all every single day I’ve been at this club, and I hope you feel like I’ve given back to you during my time here.”
