The Premier League is the most valuable league in the world by some distance. It has become a division synonymous with big spending, with other leagues struggling to compete financially with the riches in the English top-flight. This summer transfer window could see more lucrative signings heading to the Premier League, with many clubs expected to splash the cash. But where does all the money actually go? At Transfermarkt, we have broken down the numbers to see which nationalities of players Premier League clubs have spent the most money on since the division’s inception in the 1992/93 season.
Which nationalities have Premier League clubs spent most transfer fees on?
Leading the way, unsurprisingly, is England, with Premier League clubs splashing out a whopping €6.71 billion on English players in the last 33 years. In second place is France; a total of €2.68 billion has been spent by Premier League clubs on Frenchman. In third place comes the South American nation of Brazil, with €2.28b spent on Brazilians since 1992/93. Spain are fourth with a total spend of €2.02b on Spaniards, whilst the Netherlands complete the top five with €1.61b splashed on Dutch players.
In sixth position come Portugal with €1.33b spent on players from that nation by Premier League clubs. They are followed in seventh by Belgium with a €1.25b spend. In eighth come the second non-European nation on the list, with €1.20b spent on Argentine players. Germany take ninth position, with Premier League clubs having spent €788 million on German stars. Italy complete the top 10 with a €750 million spend.
