Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressed his disappointment after their Champions League elimination at the hands of Inter, voicing his frustration with what he considered an ‘unfair’ result and some refereeing decisions that, in his opinion, were in favour the Nerazzurri.
“We are all disappointed, as we put so much into this game,” said Flick at an ill-tempered press conference.
“Some 50-50 decisions all went Inter’s way, but that’s how it goes. I am proud of the team, I think the result is unfair and that some of the referee’s decisions were very good, but not in our favour. This is football, they deserved it and their fans were excellent, but we will be back next season.”
Flick was asked what specifically he had a problem with in terms of the officiating of Polish referee Szymon Marciniak.
“I don’t want to talk about it too much, it would not be fair to my team, who had a great performance. I don’t want to talk about the referee. I told him what I needed to say.”
Flick: I want to wish Inter good luck for the Champions League final
Flick and Pau Victor on the Barcelona bench were both booked for dissent, but while the Pau Cubarsi tackle on Lautaro Martinez looked clean from behind, the VAR view from the front made it obvious he didn’t get the ball.
However, Flick also took the opportunity to credit Simone Inzaghi’s men ‘both defensively and offensively’, while also wishing them ‘good luck’ for the final in Munich.
“Today, Inter’s forwards were very good, they held the ball well and are very strong players, but also experienced. We have a young team and we need to improve; our task will be to get better. From every point of view, both defensively and offensively.”
“We will analyse this match, but this is football and we can’t always win. We have to accept that. Now this game is over and we have to think about the next one, in a few days. It’s easier when you win, but we need to do it and have the hunger to win titles.
“I want to add something, since I also spoke about the referee: I want to wish Inter good luck, because they played a great match, and I want to wish them good luck in Munich.”
