El Clásico is the biggest game in football and Barcelona defeated Real Madrid in an incredible clash on Sunday afternoon. Madrid needed to win to preserve their aspirations of winning LaLiga this season and they made the perfect start, racing to a two-goal advantage within 15 minutes courtesy of a Kylian Mbappé brace. Carlo Ancelotti’s men would have cut the deficit at the top of the table to just one point with a win but Barcelona responded in style.

The Catalan giants scored four times in 26 minutes before half-time to enter the interval with a 4-2 lead after a thrilling opening 45 minutes. Mbappe completed his hat-trick to make it a tense final twenty minutes at the Olympic stadium but Barca held on to essentially secure the title. Hansi Flick’s men responded impressively to the disappointment of losing to Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-final and they are now on the verge of securing a domestic treble. Spanish football is dominated by its two biggest clubs and Barcelona’s record against their fiercest rivals this season will go down in the history books.

The most El Clásico wins in one season

Barcelona have won all four El Clásico’s this season, which is a joint-record in a single campaign – Barca also achieved this in 1982/83. This current Barca side, however, are the only in history to boast a 100% record in four or more El Clásicos in a single season in history. While Barca achieved four wins across the 1982/83 season, they played Real Madrid five times in total.

As the graphic above illustrates, Real Madrid have never won four El Clásico’s in a single season but they’ve emerged victorious on three occasions five times in their history. Interestingly, Real Madrid won all three encounters last season, which illustrates the turnaround in fortunes this season between the two Spanish giants.
