Cesc Fabregas practically confessed he will be leaving Como this summer, as Bayer Leverkusen push for his signature. ‘I will always be grateful to this club. When I leave, I hope people say Wow.’

The Lariani fought back from a goal down this afternoon to beat Cagliari 3-1 and consolidate their bid for a top 10 finish, having been promoted from Serie B last summer.

That was their sixth consecutive Serie A victory, a remarkable run of results that have made Fabregas a sought-after coach, and it looks as if he will be choosing his next club very soon.

Fabregas looks to future beyond Como

In his press conference after the game, he was asked if Como could target Europe next season, and whether it would be with or without him on the bench.

“If I say yes or no, it will make no difference,” shrugged Fabregas.

“If I win and then lose, everyone will say I am bad, I know it all. I am relaxed. You can be seen as good today, then if you do the same thing again, it is no longer the case.”

Fabregas saw out his playing career at Como, then became their coach even before getting his official badges, going from strength to strength in Serie A.

It is this bond that will make leaving more difficult for him.

“Obviously, there is an emotional aspect, I cannot deny that. Whatever happens, I will always be grateful to this club, proud of what is being built around Como. This energy at the Stadio Sinigaglia is different to when I arrived as a player.

“I want to leave here leaving an inheritance, as the important thing is that whoever follows me will find a great club with lads who have a spectacular work ethic. I want to leave this to Como, then obviously I am very fond of everyone, very involved in their future too.

“When the moment comes, I will say something.”

Fabregas denies exit is imminent

It was put to Fabregas that this sounded an awful lot like he was already saying goodbye to Como.

“No, I have always said this. When I leave, I hope people say: ‘Wow.’ My work is to prepare everything, even after 5-10 years. The most difficult thing is what we’ve done so far, but now we must raise the bar.”

Fabregas has been linked with numerous big jobs on the horizon, including Milan, Roma and Juventus, but Sportitalia are confident that Bayer Leverkusen are lining him up to replace Xabi Alonso, who is in turn heading towards Real Madrid to take over from Carlo Ancelotti.
