EXPERT TAKE

ESPN’s Dale Johnson on the chase for the signature of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.

If clubs are looking for a towering presence in the centre of defence, they should look no further than Jonathan Tah. And that’s exactly why so many clubs want to sign the Germany international on free transfer.

Tah will turn 30 next season, so the club that does sign the Bayer Leverkusen player knows they aren’t likely to get much of a transfer fee in the future. But they will get a proven title winner and 35-cap international for nothing.

Over the last two seasons, Tah has literally been head and shoulders above any other defender to play 35+ games. His aerial duel success rate of 74% is way ahead of any other player, with Ivan Ordets of VfL Bochum second on the list with 69.8%.

Tah has also registered 307 ball recoveries, the fourth best in the Bundesliga — Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck dominates this stat with 402.
