With the season concluded in Portugal, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 403 Liga Portugal players. At the very top remains Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres, with a market value of €70 million. Following in second place is now one of his teammates, Morten Hjulmand, who was updated from €45m to €50m. The 25-year-old now shares that position with Porto striker  Samu Aghehowa (unchanged). League champions Sporting dominate the new market value ranking with six out of the first seven players playing for the Lisbon club.

While the spotlight is often on Gyökeres, Danish midfielder Hjulmand has been a crucial player in his club’s title-winning campaign. “The Dane is the true leader of Sporting’s midfield, the engine that makes it work,” Transfermarkt Area Manager Portugal Gonçalo Tristão Santos said. “He seems to be everywhere on the pitch and is not only excellent at distributing the ball but also at winning it back. Beyond his importance to the team’s playing style, you can tell the team misses his captain when he’s absent, and this is only his second season at the club. At 25, he’s playing at a very high level, and it’s no surprise that some of the top European clubs are looking at him as a potential signing.”

Another Sporting player with a significant upgrade is Ousmane Diomande. “At 21, Diomande often already looks like a more experienced player due to the confidence and calmness he shows on the pitch,” Tristão Santos said. “It’s true that he still makes some youthful mistakes at times, but the fact is he has already established himself as an undisputed starter for Sporting despite his age. He’s another Sporting player being linked with major European clubs, and it will be hard for Sporting to resist selling him if good offers come in.” Signing Diomande won’t be cheap, though, and that’s reflected in his new market value. The Ivory Coast international is up by €5m to now €45m.

Portugal market values: Rodrigo Mora one to watch – Big upgrades for talents

One of the most notable upgrades go to 18-year-old Porto midfielder Rodrigo Mora. “I would say  Rodrigo Mora is one of the biggest surprises of the latest edition of the Portuguese league,” Tristão Santos said. “He started the season at just 17 years old and it was natural for him to be on the bench. However, as soon as he began to feature regularly in the starting eleven, his influence on Porto’s team became clear. He’s an immensely talented player and has even already been called up by Roberto Martínez for the national team for the Nations League final four. It would be important for him to stay in Portugal for at least one more season to consolidate his qualities. He could well be one of the next big sales from the Portuguese league to a top European club.”

Mora isn’t the only notable young player with a significant upgrade. The biggest upgrade by percentage went to 20-year-old  Mohamed Bamba from Gil Vicente. The Ivory Coast international saw his market value upgraded by 900% from €300,000 to €3m. Mora aside, another Sporting midfielder received a big upgrade. At just 18, Eduardo Felicíssimo saw his market value increase by 200% from €1m to its current market value of €3m. Elsewhere, Braga‘s 18-year-old Afonso Patrão received his first market value of €2m.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
